DIY Halloween Costumes

Halloween in my favorite holiday of the year! I love everything about Halloween. The cooler fall weather, pumpkins, crunchy leaves, scary decorations, candy and costumes, costumes, costumes!!!

This year was the perfect year for us to be the characters we have been wanting to be for a while now. We are going to be the FLINTSTONES!! Fred, Wilma and Pebbles!!

I am not a very crafty person but I "pretend" to be. I had so much fun making our costumes this year. One of my best friends who lives in Denver helped me make these awesome costumes. Lizy is the best! Without her help and laughter, the costumes wouldn't have been as much fun to make. I can't wait to wear them on Halloween.

I know very little about sewing. Like hardly anything. But I do know how to plug in the machine and press the footer to go! But once the thread and bobbin run out I have no idea what to do. So no, I would not even consider myself a beginner sewer. 

Materials

 Fred, Wilma and Pebbles Costumes:

• 2 yards orange fleece (Fred)

• 2 yards white fleece (Wilma)

• 3/4 yards lime green fleece (Pebbles)

• 1/2 yard black fleece (Fred and Pebbles spots)

• 1/4 yard turquoise fleece (Fred)

• Con-Tact Adhesive Paper

Fred Flintstone
My husband is 6'1" and 2 yards of fabric was plenty. It hangs to his mid calf after I trimmed it up. I could have gotten 1 1/2 yards and been perfectly fine with the length I wanted it on him.

1. We started with folding the orange fabric in half. I took the biggest shirt I could find and placed it one the fabric.
   
2. Trace around the shirt with a sharpie. Make sure to trace it wide as you go all the way down. It's okay if it is baggy it is basically just a big potato sack on him.  *Make sure to trace at least 1 inch away from the actual shirt. This will give you extra room on both sides when you sew it together.*
   
3. Cut out the fabric that you just traced. Pin the two pieces together and then sew.
   
4. Cut rounded triangles out of the black fleece. Place on Fred's costume and then glue with fabric glue. 
5. Fred's tie wasn't difficult at all to cut out. I put con-tact paper on the back of the fleece just so that it was easier for me to work with. You certainly don't have to do that though. I sketched a very oversized tie onto the turquoise fleece and then cut it out. From there, I practiced how I wanted to make the jagged cuts on a scratch piece. Once I liked the jagged cuts on the practice piece I started cutting on the oversized tie. I loved the way it turned out.

Wilma Flintstone

The steps were exactly the same as Fred's step by step. The only thing that was different was that I wanted mine to fit a little bit tighter. I also wanted sleeves instead of the way the real Wilma costume is. Wilma's costume was a little harder! Probably because it was the first one we started with and had no idea what we were doing. I am 5' 9" and 2 yards of fleece was plenty. I would have been fine just getting 1 1/2 yards.

1. We started with folding the white fabric in half. I took one of my dress from my closet that I love and placed it on the fleece.
   
2. Trace around the dress with a sharpie. Make sure to trace it wide as you go all the way down. *Make sure to trace at least 1 inch away from the actual dress on both sides. This will give you extra room for when you sew the sides together.*
   
3. Cut out the fabric that you just traced. Pin the two pieces together and then sew.
   
   
   
   

Pebbles Flintstone

Pebbles costume steps are exactly like Fred's. 

1. We started with folding the lime green fabric in half. I took one of Averi's dresses and placed it one top of the fleece.
   
2. Trace around the dress with a sharpie. Make sure to trace it wide as you go all the way down. *Make sure to trace at least 1 inch away from the actual dress. This will give you extra room for when you sew the sides together.*
   
3. Cut out the fabric that you just traced. Pin the two pieces together and then sew.
   
4. Cut rounded triangles out of the black fleece. Place on Pebbles costume and then glue with fabric glue.
   

You will have to check back after Halloween to see how they looked on the three of us!
